Alligators

Beware of alligators in South Carolina! They can grow up to 15 feet long and pose a danger to people and pets. They’re fast and can outrun you for short distances.

Stay safe by following these tips:

  • Don’t feed alligators: Feeding them makes them associate humans with food and approach more often. FEEDING ALLIGATORS IS ILLEGAL IN SOUTH CAROLINA.
  • Watch your surroundings: Stay aware in alligator habitats and keep your distance if you see one. Don’t try to retrieve items near them.
  • Keep away from alligators: Back away slowly and keep about 60 feet away. If it hisses or lunges, you’re too close.
  • Protect pets and children: Keep them from swimming or playing near alligator-inhabited waters. They might be mistaken for food.

Alligators try to avoid people but lose fear if they are fed by humans. Per SC law, removed alligators are exterminated.

If you have a safety concern about an aggressive alligator, call the gatehouse at 843-768-6641. SIPOA officers will contact our wildlife service provider to monitor and/or remove the alligator.
