
LSV Standards are set by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) under the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 500. (49 Code of Federal Regulations §571.500).
ATVs, UTVs, golf carts, or modified “street legal” golf carts do not qualify as LSVs and shall not be operated within the Seabrook Island Development.
SC law: All LSV occupants must follow motor vehicle rules including child safety laws.
An LSV:
- Is a 4-wheeled motor vehicle
- Is electric or gasoline powered
- Has a top speed of 20-25 mph
- Weighs less than 3,000 pounds
- Has a 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number
Requirements for LSVs/NEVs:
- Must be registered and insured
- Have a 17-digit VIN and display an LSV license plate
- Display a valid SIPOA entry pass issued specifically to that vehicle
- Drivers must have a valid driver’s license
- No off-road tires allowed
Usage Restrictions:
- For street use only. No use on bicycle paths, walking paths, boardwalks, or beaches
- Follow SIPOA vehicle and parking rules
- LSVs are included in the maximum number of vehicles per rental property
Safety Requirements:
- SC seat belt laws apply to all occupants
- Child seats are a must. SIPOA officers and CCSO will stop vehicles with unsecured children
