Promotes conservation of shorebirds and seabirds:
- Seabrook Island is a migratory stopover, overwintering site or nesting location for four endangered or threatened shorebird or seabird species as well as numerous others that are listed as Species of Concern;
- Trains volunteers to educate beachgoers, both resident and visitor, about the importance of reducing human disturbance by giving birds space to rest, to feed or to raise their young;
- Stewards also assist SCDNR, USFWS and other organizations in their research projects such as mark/re-sight studies. International Shorebird Surveys, prey surveys and banding projects;
- Stewards have participated in the organization of inaugural Sea Islands Shorebird Festival;
- The Shorebird Steward Program is endorsed by the Town of Seabrook Island and is sponsored by the Seabrook Island Birders, the Town of Seabrook Island, SCDNR and SIPOA. It receives educational support from SC Audubon.
