I grew up in Ohio, and following graduating from The Ohio State University, I started my career in hospitality, traveling throughout the country opening new hotels and repositioning others within their marketplace. My wife (Lucy) and I enjoyed the challenges of moving, meeting new friends, and getting to experience new communities. Over twenty years ago, we found the Lowcountry to be our vacation sanctuary, and after retiring in 2019, we made Seabrook Island our home, and have enjoyed meeting many wonderful friends, playing golf, tennis, pickleball, biking, and supporting various island organizations.
For forty-plus years, I worked in hospitality…as an operator, an educator, and consultant for various hospitality organizations, an academic institution, and several firms seeking my industry knowledge and expertise. During my years of managing hotel operations, I was not only responsible for driving revenues, controlling expenses, maximizing profits, and meeting the needs of our owners, but doing so while leading the company in consumer satisfaction indexes. Under my leadership, we built incredible teams by creating employee and community-centric cultures within each hotel.
After deciding to exit the “day-to-day” responsibilities of running hotel operations, I had the opportunity to teach in the Hospitality Management program at Virginia Tech. I was able to bring real-life experiences into the classroom to prepare junior and senior-level students for the industry. My three years there were incredibly rewarding as I watched the students grow and develop.
Throughout my career, I also had the opportunity to serve on numerous industry boards, as well as various community non-profit organizations. Since moving to Seabrook Island, I have served on the Town’s ATAX committee, volunteered with the Flemming Tournament, served on the Club’s General Manager search committee, currently serving on the Club’s House Committee, and have recently joined the Green Space Conservancy Board.
Throughout my career and service experiences, I learned to manage through good times as well as some challenging situations, but the constant key to success was having the right people on my team. Knowing what it takes to recruit and assemble a diverse and productive team, I believe I can bring value to the Nominating Committee. I appreciate the opportunity to be considered.
