Organization Mission: The mission of Sweetgrass Garden 501(c)3 is to provide food for the poor and the hungry. In our four years of operation we have provided hundreds of pounds of produce to local food pantries and outreach services. The majority of our donations of fresh produce have gone to the Lowcountry Food Bank to serve children in Title 1 schools hot meals during summer school and afternoon programs. We have provided thousands of pounds of produce to this end. Now we would like to expand our efforts to more directly serve the needs of the hungry on Johns Island and Wadmalaw Island.

Volunteer: Reading Partners

Organization Name: Reading Partners Charleston

Volunteer Tasks: By becoming a reading partner and volunteering as little as one hour a week at Angel Oak Elementary or 10 other Charleston County schools, you can help a child strengthen their reading skills, build confidence, and discover a passion for reading. We’ll provide ongoing support and a structured curriculum to help you become an effective tutor. Literacy unlocks opportunity. Over the past decade, volunteer reading partners have helped more than 10,000 students become confident readers by using our research-validated curriculum. Our volunteer tutors make a huge impact in the lives of their students. By sharing their passion and knowledge, tutors become mentors, friends, and more to their students. Tutoring one-on-one with a child is a fun, powerful way to help a student succeed in reading and life. No prior experience necessary to make a difference! What: Change a child’s life by joining our team of committed reading partners today! When: 1 hour a week can help a student thrive.

Organization Mission: Our mission is to help children become lifelong readers by empowering communities to provide individualized instruction with measurable results. We work in Title I elementary schools to support students from low-income communities who are reading 6 months to 2.5 years below grade-level. Organization Mission: Pet Helpers is a private, nonprofit 501(c)3 Rescue and Adoption Center and low-cost Spay/Neuter & Veterinary Center that serves communities across the Lowcountry. Our mission is to end the euthanasia of all adoptable cats and dogs by keeping all animals until adopted; providing low cost spay/neuter surgeries; offering humane education programs; pursuing animal-cruelty prosecution; and initiating animal-welfare legislation. et Helpers was founded in 1978 by Carol Linville (pictured above left), now President of Pet Helpers, after she learned that 8,000 pets were being euthanized each year at local shelters. It began as a weekly “adopt a pet” column. More than 30 years later, that column has grown into Pet Helpers Rescue and Adoption Shelter, one of the foremost animal rescue organizations in South Carolina. Pet Helpers has slowly evolved into a widely recognized and innovative shelter that offers caring solutions to the serious problems created by pet overpopulation. For 36 years, we have focused on the needs of homeless animals. Through a commitment to quality sheltering and required spay/neuter, we have worked tirelessly to save those animals that are without human guardianship. We service the entire Lowcountry, where we are the only independent adoption shelter and veterinary center of our kind, that is fully-staffed and maintains regular business hours. We answer 20,000 calls a year to provide assistance and information to the public concerning animal issues. Pet Helpers is preparing to take our next steps- completing our building footprint to increase animal-holding capacity and expand our life-saving programs. We invite our community supporters to join us as we embark upon the next chapter in our journey.
